Martha Cooper is a documentary photographer who has documented the once underground culture of street art for over 40 years, specializing in photographing urban art and architecture. In 1977, she moved from Rhode Island to New York City and worked as a staff photographer for the New York Post for three years. Around that time, she began documenting graffiti and B-boy culture, which led to extensive coverage of early hip-hop that originated in the Bronx. Her photographs, exhibited worldwide, have helped influence young people around the globe by highlighting hip-hop as an important culture today.
She began capturing the beauty and originality of graffiti art, as well as the innovators behind it, immortalizing their work through photographs of painted subway cars and city walls. She contributed to legitimizing graffiti writers at a time when few established members of the art world praised their work, helping to establish graffiti as one of today's important cultures.
